Do you Freecycle?

We do!  What is Freecycle you ask?  It’s a community hosted on Yahoo Groups for people who want to recycle their used items instead of throwing them away or selling them.  This helps keep unwanted items out of the landfill and you can help someone out who really needs something that you don’t want or need anymore.  You can find a local Freecycle Group at http://www.freecycle.org/ and membership is completely free.

How it works is you post an offer for something that you don’t need anymore, like, say, a desk.  Then members will email you asking to be gifted the desk.  You choose who to give the item to and that person will come pick it up.  You don’t have to do anything!  Once the item is picked up, you post a “TAKEN” message.

You can also post for things that you want.  Say your lawnmower broke down and you need a new one, but just can’t afford it.  You can put up a “WANTED” post, telling people why you need it.  If someone has a lawnmower that they are willing to gift, they will email you and let you know they have one for you.  Then you make arrangements to go and get it.  Often people will leave the item on their front porch with your name on it and you can come and pick the stuff up without even speaking with anyone.

The local groups are moderated and any spam or inappropriate posts will be filtered out.  It’s not a group where you sell anything…everything is gifted for FREE, hence the name.   You can choose to get all emails individually, or, if you’re like us, choose a digest of posts to be delivered once or twice a day…you can also just go and peruse the message board to see what people are offering.

Some of the great things we’ve received through Freecycle

  • 2 dressers
  • desk and bookshelf
  • daybed
  • scrapbooking items
  • accessories for the baby’s carseat
  • 12-year-old Maytag washer and dryer (right when our dryer died and our washer was on its last legs)

It’s really an awesome community.  Today we put a bunch of stuff up for offer and we’ll be posting a lot more in the next few days.  I would recommend it to anyone.

  1. Yep, I really love freecycle. I’ve also got some great stuff over the past few years and have also offered quite a lot too. :o)

  2. I’ve tried to use it once to get something but the person forgot to put TAKEN and the item I wanted wasn’t available anymore. It does seem like a GREAT site though! Another one I like is craigslist, check that one for free things too.

  3. yup, I freecycle! given away so much stuff and received some pretty awesome stuff, too! been doing it for a few years now!!!

  4. I do, yup! I’ve only given away stuff so far though… but after we move I’m hoping to acquire some items we’ll need! It’s a great resource! 🙂
